Get Started! Clear Out The Clutter

Posted on June 27, 2009

Begin with the closets

If you are in the process of selling your home, trust me, it makes a difference to people viewing your home.  If your closets are so cluttered and they cannot see past the clutter, it may make them think you do not have any storage, when in fact, you do! Plus you want those “potential” buyers to feel “at home” and begin to place their own items in the house.

A first step

Clear Out the Clutter; get rid of everything you do not love in your home.  Clearing the clutter is one of the hardest things I have had to do in my own home.  We form such attachments to “things” for various reasons. Memories; I might need it later; it will come in handy, sometime; Let me put it in the closet for “later”. Clearing clutter is a time and energy-consuming process that will feel like therapy, but it will help you to “lighten the load” in a manner of speaking.  This step is a very essential step in creating a harmonious feeling in your home.

Begin with your “Closets”.  Ouch! Most people think of closets as out-of sight, out-of-mind.  This is not really true, especially in Feng Shui terms, as we know that the energy or feeling is everything in your rooms.  Unfortunately most homes today, have very busy and cluttered closets.  If you think of it in the Feng Shui terms, the clothes in your closet, if housed in a messy environment, and then you put them on, you may begin carrying that kind of energy with and on you throughout your day.  I have found this to be true about myself.  It can give one a feeling of not looking your best, not feeling your best, feeling “cluttered” if you will.  If you have a cluttered closet, one that is not organized in a good manner,  messy with hard to find items, checkout the feelings you have when trying to find what you are looking for.  It helps you understand how you feel throughout the day just because of the frustration.  It is the same for your entire house.

Here are some easy Feng Shui tips to help you along.

Color and Light.  If you have a walk in closet, be sure the lighting is soft, friendly and warm.  Good quality lighting is important for your well-being.

CLEARING CLUTTER.  Clear out what you do not wear or haven’t worn for years.  Clear out worn-out items that no longer suit you.  Be brave get rid of it.

ORGANIZE.  There are lots of ways to organize your closet inexpensively, from “tubs”; yes I said tubs, to boxes, baskets, shoe organizers and the like.  Create a system whereas you get rid of items that no longer suit you. Change out with the seasons, from front to back, organize by item, shirts, suits, blouses, jackets, then organize by color.

Do it to suit your own needs, simply, don’t make it difficult.  Watch for the changes that will come along as you begin this path.  It is simply treating your home with respect and the respect you show your home speaks of the respect you have for yourself.
